Natural bacteria in the vaginal area is nothing to freak out about. It’s something that all of us have. But sometimes, especially due to the moisture down there, an overgrowth of bacteria can lead to…let’s just say some pretty unpleasant odors.
“Normal odors”? Those are the ones that happen during your period, after working out or right after you have sex. Abnormal odors? That can be due to all sorts of things like poor hygiene, wearing a tampon too long or an infection like bacterial vaginosis or an STD.
If you have symptoms like itching, burning or a drastic change in your discharge (it smells fishy or it’s a different color than some variation of white), see your doctor. DO NOT diagnose what’s going on via Google! But if it’s a musty scent that’s more annoying than anything else, here are some ways to eliminate those smells---naturally.
Eat Some Greek Yogurt
Your vagina is an area of your body that cleanses itself naturally. This means that you don’t need to douche. If anything, that works against your body’s chemistry and can lead to yeast infections. Something that you can do to keep your vagina’s natural flora in balance is to eat some Greek yogurt a few times a week. And if you do end up with a yeast infection, there’s another way to make yogurt work for you. Dip a tampon into some of it and insert it directly into your vagina at night. It will soothe irritated lining and also help to speed up the healing process. Just make sure that it’s plain, organic and unsweetened!
Try Some Apple Cider Vinegar
here to read some of the many ways apple cider vinegar can help you out! One of them includes removing vaginal odor, almost on contact. The liquid has potent antibacterial properties that can get your vagina back to its regular pH levels and also eliminate odor. Pour a couple of cups into your bathwater and soak for 20 minutes. Also put a teaspoon into a cup of water each morning to cleanse you from the inside out. (Tip: Go with the Bragg’s brand. It’s the best!)
Have Some garlic
Garlic stinks. No argument there. Ironically, it contains antifungal properties that can help to remove vagina odor. And, if it’s related to a bacterial or vaginal infection, it can help to boost your immune system so that your body can heal. You can use garlic a couple of ways to treat vagina odor. You can put fresh garlic into your food. You can also cut a clove in quarters, wrap a piece in a gauze and insert it direct into your vagina. Just make sure it’s at night and to take a shower in the morning. Otherwise, the garlic smell will easily overpower the vaginal one!
Create a Tea Tree Oil Tampon
Something you can easily find at your local drugstore that you need to have in your bathroom cabinet (like yesterday) is tea tree oil. It removes inflammation and bacteria associated with acne (without drying out your skin). If you gargle with it, it cures bad breath. It heals cold sores, removes itching from insect bites and can even cure fungal infections such as athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. It also gets rid of vaginal odor. The key is to dilute it first. Otherwise, it can BURN! Put a couple of drops into some room temperature water and wipe your vagina. Or you can put a tampon into some virgin olive oil, then put the tip of it into some tea tree oil and sleep with the tampon inside. Do this for a few days and the odor should be completely gone.
Experiment with Indian Gooseberry
Don’t feel bad if you don’t have Gooseberries in your fruit bowl. In many ways, it’s a best-kept secret that people in India have been using for years to treat vaginal odor. The way it works is it’s a natural blood purifier. The cleaner your blood is, the sooner it can help to fight whatever is causing your vagina to have an unpleasant smell in the first place. (Tip: You might want to go to a health food store to find these. It’s not common in most grocery stores.)
Wear Cotton Underwear
No matter how much effort you put into keeping your vagina clean, it’s not going to matter much if you never let it “breathe”. Since your vagina produces its own discharge, if there’s lots of moisture and no air, than can lead to odor and/or an infection too. Solution: wear cotton underwear during the day and sleep naked at night. It’s one of the most effective ways to keep vaginal odor in check.
